Description |
Swatow Typhoon killed thousands in the Chinese city of Swatow in August, 1922. The death toll makes it one of the deadliest typhoons in history. Note with photo: In the foreground is the back of the customs harbor. 27 bodies were taken out. Another floating pile-driver is piled high on our [?]. Junks of various sorts broke in the front of our boatmen's quarters. The wreckage you see is floating. The damage to Customs property was heavy though the buildings were built to withstand typhoons, earthquakes, fires, mosquitos, flies, etc., but not the battering of junks! Printed photo credit: Mee Cheung, Photographer, Swatow China. Purple oval ink stamp in lower corner. |
