Description |
Amache evacuees were deeply involved in military activities. Soon after war was declared, Japanese Americans who were already in the service were either discharged or assigned to non-combat roles. Others of draft age were re-classified 4-F "physically unfit" or 4-C "enemy aliens unacceptable because of nationality or ancestry." On January 28, 1943 the government reversed its position on military service and announced the formation of an all-Japanese American combat team to be made up of volunteers from the mainland and Hawaii. The unit was the 442nd combat team that would become the most highly decorated fighting unit in U.S. military history. The 4C classification would be changed to 1A. Amache men volunteered or were drafted into military service in large numbers. A total of 614 men were called for induction. Of this number, 445 were accepted, 135 rejected, 32 refused to report and 2 were not listed as to status at the time of the report. Of the 32 who refused to report, 31 were eventually brought to trial and sentenced to federal prison. The 31 men said they would not comply with the draft orders as long as their families were incarcerated in the concentration camp. They were considered "resisters of conscience." After the war was over, their cases were reviewed, and in 1947 the men received a pardon from President Harry S. Truman. Thirty-one men from Amache were killed in action during the time their families were still incarcerated. Another 106 were wounded. Men from Amache fought in both the European and the Pacific areas of operation. |
