Education
was a
major
activity
area
at
Amache
. A
complete
K-12
school
system
was
developed
with
classes
for
children
held
in
converted
barracks
in
Block
811
. The
classes
began
on
October
12
,
1942
,
about
one
month
after
the
evacuees
arrived
in
Amache
. In
June
1943
, a
new
high
school
was
constructed
for
use
by
senior
and
junior
high
students
. The
elementary
school
children
continued
their
education
in the
converted
barracks
.
Prior
to the
construction
of the
high
school
,
classes
were
held
in
modified
barracks
.
When
schools
were
first
started
in
Amache
, there were
few
textbooks
,
no
student
desks
, a
very
limited
curriculum
, and
few
fully
qualified
teachers
.
Conditions
gradually
improved
and
eventually
the
educational
system
was
given
accreditation
from the
North
Central
Association
of
Colleges
and
Secondary
Schools
.
After
Amache
was
finally
closed
in
1948
, the
school
was
moved
to
La
Junta
,
Colorado
.
