Description |
Note that this description refers to am1_0037 and am2_0007: Education was a major activity area at Amache. A complete K-12 school system was developed with classes for children held in converted barracks in Block 811. The classes began on October 12, 1942, about one month after the evacuees arrived in Amache. In June 1943, a new high school was constructed for use by senior and junior high students. The elementary school children continued their education in the converted barracks. Prior to the construction of the high school, classes were held in modified barracks. When schools were first started in Amache, there were few textbooks, no student desks, a very limited curriculum, and few fully qualified teachers. Conditions gradually improved and eventually the educational system was given accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. After Amache was finally closed in 1948, the school was moved to La Junta, Colorado. |
