Description	One of the first business operations in Amache was a canteen that sold small items such as candy, newspapers, cigarettes, etc. Some evacuees were able to get passes to travel to Lamar (17 miles from Amache) to shop for essentials, especially hardware supplies to build furniture and partitions for the rooms. Later, a community "U" shaped store was built and became the center of evacuee shopping. Evacuees could purchase shares in the cooperative and receive rebates.
