Description |
Amache was scheduled for closure on October 15, 1945. All basic operations and facilities were gradually shut down and would end on that date. All evacuees were urged to leave Amache as quickly as possible. Two girls ready for the long train ride back to their homes in California are shown leaving by truck for the Granada railroad station. When they left Amache, each evacuee was issued a ticket to their destination and twenty five dollars to restart their life on the outside. Project Director Lindley made the following statements in his final report dated November 15, 1945: 'A paragraph is necessary to express my feeling toward the evacuees. I have a lasting and deep regard for them. It is hard for one to visualize any other group of people who would be so well behaved under similar conditions. In close contact with them over three years I can only admire their cheerful acceptance of unfair treatment; their overcoming of fear, resentment and frustration; their willingness to give their time and effort to make various phases of the WRA program work... They are people, even as you and I. Capable of assimilation into our western civilization, they bring to it a love of beauty, a time factor which we westerners are in danger of ignoring, a recognition of the need of courtesy and politeness in our everyday dealings. It is my hope that through their dispersal throughout the country, both they and their neighbors will benefit by mutual association and that something good will come out of this 'piece of wartime folly.' |
