Description	Fire and safety were two major concerns at Amache. The barrack rooms were heated with coal, a product unfamiliar to the California evacuees, so fire was always a concern. Inadequate wiring was also a concern as evacuees who tried to use irons and other electrical appliances in their rooms would cause overloaded circuits to blow a fuse and sometimes create fires. The fire department at Amache consisted of a WRA fire chief, an evacuee fire chief, three assistant chiefs, six captains and three groups of ten firemen each working the eight hours providing twenty four hour fire protection in the camp.
