Description	Fire and safety were two major concerns at Amache. The barrack rooms were heated with coal, a product unfamiliar to the California evacuees, so fire was always a concern. Inadequate wiring was also a concern as evacuees who tried to use irons and other electrical appliances in their rooms would cause overloaded circuits to blow a fuse and sometimes create fires.The fire department at Amache consisted of a WRA fire chief, an evacuee fire chief, three assistant chiefs, six captains and three groups of ten firemen each working for eight hours providing twenty-four hour fire protection in the camp. Amache had two fire trucks capable of throwing 500 gallons of water per minute on fires. There were some fires in Amache involving mess halls and rooms in barracks but no major multiple building fires. There was some property damage but no injuries due to fires.
