Description |
View of Amache in December 1942. When first approaching Amache, visitors would have noted its similarity to an Army camp because of the rows of barracks, barbed wires and military checkpoint at the entry gate. Amache also resembled a prison because of the armed sentry towers with searchlights, barbed wires, and jeep patrol roads around its perimeter. After entry, the differences between a military installation and a concentration camp for civilians became apparent. Amache consisted of a mile square cluster of buildings and barracks sectioned off into 30 blocks. Each block had 13 barracks, a group mess hall for eating, and a communal H shaped building used for toilets, showers, laundry, and an office for the block manager. One barrack in each block was set aside for use as a church, club meeting hall, or recreation hall. The blocks were separated by a dirt road for fire break and safety reasons. Each block housed approximately 260 evacuees. Block 811 was set aside for use as a school. |
