January
1943
, the
thermometer
registered
22
below
zero
!
Evacuees
from
California
had
never
been
subjected
to
such
conditions
and
did
not
bring
winter
clothing
to
adequately
cope
with the
cold
. They
purchased
coats
and
other
items
from
catalog
stores
.
Some
were
able
to
obtain
surplus
G.I
.
clothing
(all
oversize
for the
smaller
evacuees)
.
