Description |
This photo is from the 'Photos Fountaingrove 1899' album, which includes a number of portraits of Fountaingrove community members and visitors as well as landscape photos of the estate. The photo depicts Kanaye Nagasawa, an influential member of the Fountaingrove community. Kanaye's birth name was Hikosuke Isonaga; he was originally from Kagoshima, Japan and of samurai ancestry. As an adolescent, he was one of the 'Kagoshima Fifteen,' a group of young Japanese that were sent abroad to study Western culture in the 1860's, when Japan was still closed to Western visitors. Nagasawa moved to Santa Rosa with Thomas Lake Harris, founder of Fountaingrove. While here he expanded upon his talents as a viticulturalist by producing the 'Fountain Grove' wine label. Nagasawa was one of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. and an important member of the Japanese American community. |
