Description |
This photo is from the 'Photos Fountaingrove 1899' album, which includes a number of portraits of Fountaingrove community members, visitors, and landscape photos of the estate. The Cottage (also known as the Familistery) was a two story house built for the women of the Fountaingrove colony. Celibacy was a central belief of the community, and married couples often lived separately. Though marriages were allowed, they were only granted to those community members deemed advanced enough to remain celibate. The Cottage was surrounded by an English garden and hedge.
