Transcript	Know all men by these presents that I, David O Shattuck of the County of Sonoma and State of California for and in consideration of the meritorious services of Sam (a man of Color and formerly a slave owned by me in the State of Louisiana, and for the further consideration of his having served me two years in California, as per agreement, I have emancipated and set free, and do by these presents emancipate and forever set free him the said Sam to be known hereafter as Samuel Shattuck and by that name to act for himself, and enjoy the benefit of his own contracts and labour in every respect as any other free man – so far as permitted by the law of the state. In testimony where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 21st day of April AD 1852 David O Shattuck Description - Sam or Samuel Shattuck – a full blooded black – about fifty-five years old – about five feet eleven inches high, - straight built, rather spare – and weighing about 160 lbs D O Shattuck Witness John Steadly John A Beuster
